a crescendo of support

Each time this project gets more press, pace of developments quicken. Short announcements for our presentation at the Friends of the Public Library's Thursday Thinkers helped bring 110 people—as counted by Friends' and Library trustee Bill Pontius—leaving 15 people standing.

Sarah Lentini, President of the Arts & Cultural Council, hadn't confirmed her intention to attend, and pleasantly surprised us. Weeks earlier we learned our submission for the Culture Builds Community grant won an award of $15500, but we would need to withhold news until the formal press release March 10, its award ceremony. Into the sequence of speakers, after our Flash animation and Powerpoint presentations, Ms Lentini announce our grant before the press and R News.

That kicked off the panel presentation with Kenichiro, and Bill Pritchard of City Council, who has long supported the project. Leading off the Q&A, impromptu from the audience, Dan Morgenstern introduced himself as a resident who liked city living so much he moved from the suburbs. That brought a round of applause. He bought the old Harry Forman's building, in line of sight to SUNY Brockport MetroCenter's north wall, site of the proposed photo-mosaic. He announced to our surprise, we could use his building too. Another round of applause erupted. Impressed, Ms Lentini and i raised our eyebrows in surprise and applauded too.

Then from stage in an amazing public impromptu, before even allocating funds, Mr Pritchard announced an available pot of $10000 from which as chair of a committee he could direct appropriations. He also commended us for choosing the right partners, while a Powerpoint slide remained onscreen listing some of them: the Arts & Cultural Council, Rochester Downtown Development Corporation, and SUNY Brockport.

Before the program R News interviewed Kenichiro. Later that evening they broadcasted a lengthy 3 minute segment. As the only television news crew that decided to attend, they got the scoop. Reporter Christina Domingues got the facts straight and presented the project in a good light, as have other outlets. We'd like to get digital video of the segment.

Earlier that morning Kenichiro and i presented before the board and members of the Rochester Downtown Development Corporation. The Culture Builds Community grant required applications from neighborhood organizations, not artists themselves. As one of the few civic organizations devoted to downtown, they met that criterium. Sometime after our presentation an RDDC member pledged support. Later that evening Lou Spiro, Vice President for Finance & Administration for SUNY Brockport, another RDDC member and recipient of the photo-mosaic, pledged additional support, now totalling $4000 through 2009.

All in all… pretty amazing.
