Casas Nuevas: An illustration for a proposal to the East End Garage Art Façade Competition
Main Street can and should assume its role as a distinctive public walkway connecting arts destinations and align the axis of the Downtown Arts District. In concert with these goals, and to address the streetscape, especially as new housing enriches downtown with new residents, the artists of “Casas Nuevas” propose a collaboration of fire sculpture and photography with potential to render this small section of modern architecture a more cozy place like it once was not so long ago.
Low-pressure sodium vapor lamps may be efficient, but they also wash their environs in monochrome, rendering the night bright but cold and spooky. Installing and lighting seven human-sized photos in whiter light relieves the lonely walk. Viewed from across the street, they recast the Garage as a grand proscenium.
